How long does it last?
Child maltreatment has consequences that can last a lifetime, particularly if it continues throughout childhood without treatment being provided to the family and/or to the child.
Adults who were maltreated as children may carry a legacy of anxiety and depression. Not all children continue to have difficulties, though. Some children have personal characteristics that seem to make them more resilient in the face of adversity and limit the negative effects of their experience. [1]
